Your productivity issue isn't about willpower. It's about geometry.
The new paradigm of productivity isn't about willpower. It’s geometry.
A note on productivity and agency in the age of collapse
Hi Reader,
I want to share a story about productivity.
Yesterday, in a co-working chat, I noticed a peer struggling.
I could tell they were feeling the weight of the afternoon—checking their phone, looking off to the side, clearly overwhelmed by whatever they were trying to force onto the page. They had bounds of vivacious energy, but something in their workflow just wasn't clicking.
Out of nowhere, they tagged me in a comment.
"@rayner How do you do this day in and day out?"
"What do you mean?"
"Working. Where do you get the gumption?"
I paused. Human misalignment doing its thing again.
I wasn't doing anything remarkable. I was just sitting there, doing what I assumed everyone else was doing. I didn't feel like I was standing out, and I certainly didn't feel like I was flexing immense willpower.
A moment later, someone else chimed in to guess my Myers-Briggs, assuming my steady output must be tied to some specific personality badge. When I mentioned that INTJ wasn't even my type, they tried to re-categorize me into another box, trying to explain the phenomenon.
It made me realize how easily we misunderstand what’s actually happening when someone is in flow. We immediately assume it's powered by talent or sheer grit—the kind of brute-force hustle that requires you to bite your lip and push through exhaustion.
People call that "gumption," when what they really mean is strain.
Here's what I said:
For me? The key is not trying to prove my worth, maintaining broad perception, and retaining high agency in systems that actively try to take it away.
Real gumption isn't forced. It requires no strain. It's the natural reservoir of enthusiasm that exists when you aren't fighting your own engine. It’s what remains when internal friction drops away and you've aligned the pieces of your being so precisely that your function becomes natural.
As you pursue genuine self-alignment, you will find that you become naturally happier. Regardless of your current individual circumstances or the complexities in your life, which can vary considerably from person to person or from chapter to chapter, something full comes into form when you align—regardless of what time it is. Have you tasted it before?
Our everyday culture sells a very specific lie: that if you're struggling, you just need to try harder, buy a better planner, or force yourself into a template that never knew or cared about your real complexity. For years, I operated on this template, as did many of those I worked with. If we just push harder the way the system wants, things will work, right?
Wrong. But that myth is why, when people see someone moving steadily without burnout, they assume it’s a rare personality trait or a secret reserve of discipline. They think I'm not as marginalized, neurodivergent, or burdened by difficulty. None of those things are true.
Everybody has access to that natural gumption.
The flow state you're after has nothing to do with standard corporate productivity rules or rigid personality typing. When you're struggling, misfiring, or feeling like you have to drag yourself across the finish line every afternoon, it's rarely because you aren't working hard enough.
It's usually a quiet signal that the geometry is wrong.
Working smarter isn't about finding another productivity hack or pushing. It's the result of the deeper, quieter work of understanding how you're configured, getting those internal pieces in order, and letting your own natural momentum and configuration do the heavy lifting.
You can put all the willpower in the world behind something. But will is easier to muster when you've built the core components correctly. I know and trust that you are taking the steps to develop the foundations.
